Nonku Phiri

Joining us for the Cook-a-long on Tuesday 15 May, is talented musician Nonku Phiri. She is known for distinctive and soulful voice that seems to be helping shape the future of South Africa’s electronic music scene.

Nonku was born with the love of music already instilled into her veins, being the daughter of the legendary, late and great Ray Phiri. Even though her father was a musical legend, she never used his name to get ahead in the industry, but instead she has been determined to make it on her own, which is exactly what she has done. She doesn’t define her music to one specific genre, instead she is a versatile artist that spans into multiple genres such as kwaito, house, hip hop, and electronic.

She has collaborated with some of the big names in the industry such as Crazy White Boy, Jack Parow, P.H Fat, and the legendary Mahotella Queens. She made a splash in the industry when she released the chart topping singles ‘Things We Do On The Weekend’ and ‘Regrettables’, which are arguably instant classics. She is a true example that with enough perseverance independent artists. Her journey as an independent artist is something that she will be putting on full display, on the EP that she is working on, which is set to be released under her label, Albino Black.
